Todi is found 411 meters above sea level in an area steeped with hills and valleys, which are an integral part of the the Tevere River Park (Parco Fluviale del Tevere), the sinuous river which flows along the valley floor. Surrounded by an endless mixture of gentle hills, wheat and sunflower fields, olive groves and vineyards, forests of oak and holm, antique farm houses, tiny medieval suburbs and isolated castles erected to guard the surrounding territory (a tipography print of 1700 reveals that Todi once boasted 365 castles, one for each day of the year, some of which maintain their original structure, such as Castello di Montenero and Castello di Izzalini). |
All of which create natural, fascinating routes ideal for long and relaxing treks – by foot, on horseback or mountainbiking - for both history and nature lovers. For those wanting to “risk” a little more canoeing, river rafting and spelaeology is offered in the Centre of Pontecuti, headquarters of the Todi spelaeology group. Nature lovers will find many other interesting places to visit: Martani Mountains, Lake Corbara whose sinuous waters flow into the long and thin “Forello Throat”, not to mention the Alviano Animal Oasis where the World Wildlife Federation has created a visitor and research centre for the study of lake environments and avifauna, also ideal for birdwatching, the fossil forest of Dunarobba near Avigliano, the magnificent Marmore Waterfall near Terni. |
